The Key to Growth

So you started working on the new idea…or at the new job…or on the new project, and then…you find yourself wondering what in the earth you got into.  “Hey, this wasn’t how it was supposed to be!” or “I thought that it was going to be a lot easier than this!”  These are the types of thoughts that set in after the initial enthusiasm and feelings of adrenaline have begun to ware off.

This is what we know as the process.  You know…when you get into the thick and thin of a matter and things don’t always go according to plan.  It may be the result of some unforseen circumstances, bad assumptions or change in variables.  Hey, wait a minute…that’s life.

And you know one of the biggest challenges obstacles barriers frustrations, no…keys of the process is…RESISTANCE.  It’s when you get the most growth.  I’ll prove it to you.

Here’s a simple analogy.  When you’re working out, trying to build lean muscle mass, you’re actually tearing your muscles first.  This sends the signal to the body to not only repair the damaged muscle but to also rebuild it stronger than it was before.  So the weight (resistance) actually helps the muscle (you) to grow.

Let’s think about this a little further.  When was the last time that everything was smooth sailing for you?  Life was going well and you didn’t have much in your way.  While those times are good and all, you weren’t being stretched or forced to have to grow during them.  Now think back to when your 1st business failed, you didn’t get that job or when it looked as if you were about to lose that customer’s account.  Now that you’ve come out on the other side, chances are that the situation has made you stronger, wiser and better prepared for your current endeavors.  During those times is when you build character, sharpen your skillsets and develop patience (man, do I hate that last one!  :) )

So the next time you find yourself up against a challenge, smile and remember that the key to growth is resistance.  You shape your circumstances or your circumstances shape you…either way the choice is yours.
